The European projects VALUE and HARMONICS in stroke and innovation: finalist in the SaluDigital Awards

The European projects, VALUE and HARMONICS ( Harmonising data collection to deliver high value stroke care ), co-financed by EIT Health, and in which the Agency for Health Quality and Assessment of Catalonia (AQuAS) and the Master Plan of the cerebrovascular diseases of the Department of Health , among other bodies and organizations, were selected as finalists in the category of projects in development during the VI SaludDigital Awards gala held in Madrid. The two projects were chosen from among the more than eighty initiatives presented.
The SaluDigital Awards are organized by the Mediforum Group -publisher of the digital media SaluDigital.es and ConSalud.es- and aim to recognize the best technological initiatives, public and private, as well as projects under development to improve health, people’s well-being and quality of life.
Both projects take advantage of common synergies by applying the methodologies and knowledge of the Innovation and Foresight Area of the AQuAS in the field of the adoption of innovative interventions. In this way, the aim is to promote the evaluation and incorporation of digital transformation tools into the Health System to respond to the unmet needs identified as: lack of accurate, timely, complete and coherent data, from which it is possible to to extract information and knowledge for decision-making in clinical practice and, in the Catalan case, especially for acute and post-acute stroke patients.

The value project

The VALUE project is based on interactive process mining to discover and optimize daily clinical practices according to health care processes. The solution being worked on in VALUE uses clinical results to offer detailed maps of what happens in clinical practice. It does this by encouraging collaboration between clinical, technical and administrative staff and by including software and a methodology that encourage communication between the agents involved in healthcare provision.
The Innovation and Foresight Area of the AQuAS leads the work group Assessment of the impact and generation of evidence for a future adoption of the innovation. For this task, it has the support of the AQuAS Participation Area and the Master Plan for cerebrovascular diseases of the Department of Health. The Stroke Unit of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital is also participating to analyze their daily clinical practices.

The harmonics project

The HARMONICS project, coordinated by the Stroke Unit of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, aims to create a new centralized registry of health outcomes and health care for stroke patients in the European Union . In this register, the data of the results of each regional register, designed and implemented within the project, would be integrated. This could automatically capture KPIs (key performance indicators) and outcome measures from electronic health records, providing regional and interregional benchmarking and sharing best practices. With the HARMONICS solution, it is expected to be able to follow up stroke patients, mainly at the post-hospital level, ensuring better results, a faster and more effective recovery,
The Innovation and Prospective Area of AQuAS, which has the support of the Master Plan for cerebrovascular diseases of the Department of Health and CatSalut for this project, contributes to the analysis of the best clinical management strategies to evaluate the economic impact of the implemented interventions and health economics studies: cost-effectiveness and cost-saving studies of the deployment of the initiative.
